EXPLORER COURSES (Ages 5-10)

Early Development

EXPLORER 1: Incredible Inventions

Recommended Ages: 5-6

What we study:

In this course, students learn about how simple ideas - in fields from construction to automotive engineering to space travel - can transform into something useful and impactful for generations to come. We will focus on the process of identifying a problem, brainstorming a solution, and creating an invention that addresses societal needs over the years. Students in this class will gain an appreciation for the scientific method, modern technology, and advancements in everyday life, while also perfecting their building skills, attention to detail, and focus. As we learn about the technological achievements of humankind, students develop logical and engineering-based thinking, independence, and creativity. This course is geared towards students who have a strong grasp of LEGO building and are willing to push themselves further and excited to undertake challenges.

EXPLORER 2: Mechanics Investigations

Recommended Ages: 5.5-7

What we study:

The ideal course for students eager to understand how modern machines work! Lessons focus on simple machines that we may see every day to introduce students to the laws of physics through play! Each class session begins with an interactive lesson about a specific mechanism or simple machine, what problem led to its development, and how it has impacted daily life. Students will then build a moving model - using precisely-chosen axles and gears of different sizes - during which students are responsible for measuring and counting. Finally, to reinforce their understanding of how the mechanism operates, students are given a task during which they will experiment by making adjustments to the mechanism/machine and observing the changes.

EXPLORER 3: Discovering the World with Minecraft

Recommended Ages: 7-10

What we study:

Minecraft is the best "secretly educational" game out there, requiring players to use their resource management, creativity, engineering, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. For this course, we've leveraged the platform's core strengths to develop a series of custom Minecraft "worlds" specifically tailored to our curriculum. At each lesson, the instructor opens with an engaging presentation on a new STEM topic, and then provides gentle guidance and support as students navigate the relevant Minecraft "world" - applying their new knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills to solve a series of puzzles and challenges, meet objectives, and expand the world together!
